10 Items I’m Wishing for Right Now

Hiiii! Yes, it’s been awhile since I’ve last blogged about nothing. There’s no “but” to follow, I just haven’t posted anything. (Terrible, I know.) With Christmas and a New Year on its way, I thought it would be good to write about what I’m wishing for. I’m not the type to ask for a lot of things. It took me some time to come up with the items that you will see on the list below, because of that very reason. I knew I wanted to make this kind of post for this time of the year. Now that I have drafted one, I thought it would be fun and cute to share with my readers. So here it goes! In no particular order, here are my ten picks of things I am currently wishing for:

1. Axent Wear Cat Ear Headphones

Are these not the cutest headphones ever made? I’d considered purchasing the everso popular Beats by Dre headphones in one of those rad colors, but after coming across these cute cat-ear headphones I knew I had to have a pair. They totally fit my style and quirky personality (the LED accent lights come in different colors, too). It’s like having three of my favorite things combined: me, music, and cats. Winner, winner, chicken dinner! I don’t know where that last sentence came from, but I do know that whoever thought of the concept for these must’ve had me in mind when they created them. I cannot not have them!

2. Rosetta Stone

I haven’t been practicing my choice language in months now only because i think it’ll be more conducive and effective for me to have a tutor who primarily speaks the language I’m learning. I have just about every kind of language app there is installed on my Galaxy phone, but until I can find a tutor, I need something in addition to all those apps. I’ve heard good (and bad) things about Rosetta Stone. I have the app for it, too, and while it is helpful, it’s not really cutting it. I think having the entire set will be of better use. Maybe it still won’t be enough, but there’s only one way for me to find out . . .

3. Roundtrip Airline Ticket

I recently ordered a sweet leopard print 4-piece luggage set and I cannot wait to use it next year for my first real getaway to another part of the world. All I need is the roundtrip plane ticket and I will be set to go. 2015 couldn’t get her soon enough!

4. Apple Computer

Hmmm, I’m so used to using PC with Windows software that I’m not so sure how I will fair with a MacBook. I know Apple users are scaringly crazily fond of the products. I, for one, have never used any kind of Apple electronic/iPhone/gadget, but I think it’ll behoove me to have an Apple computer in the longrun. We’ll see if I really will get one or if this will only remain as a wish.

5. Zuhair Murad

You guys and dolls just don’t know how much I love this designer. Seriously, you should see my Pinterest board with pins of Zuhair Murad collections all over it. If it has sequins, crystals, beading, embellishments, anything sparkly, it’s guaranteed to catch my eye. Zuhair Murad’s haute couture gowns have all of that and then plenty of more. What I also like about the dresses is how they seem to balance the designs with the right amount of material for revealing skin. I don’t think I’ve ever looked at a Zuhair Murad design and said I wouldn’t wear it. Never. I can see myself wearing the dress shown above. I’d look good in that, don’t you think? Yeah.

6. Big Bang (comeback) Album

It’s no secret around here that I’m a fan. I think VIPs would understand me when I say I need for the OT5 to make a real comeback STAT! A real one. No solo work; no touring, singing the same hits that made their fans fall for them. I need new music from all five of them together as a group, not separately. With army enlistment fast approaching for the members, it would be nice to have a new album from the guys to add to my playlist. I bought my first KPop album by BTS (“Dark and Wild”) not long ago since they’re the only other KPop group I listen to consistently. (In a sense I blame Big Bang for this, but I don’t regret it in the least bit.) And while I have grown very fond of BTS, I need for my “first love” to get in the studio, go back to their roots (I pray), and release a good bop. I repeat, 2015 couldn’t get here soon enough.

7. Edgestick

Living in the south where every day is a struggle with humidity and sweat in the summer heat, a girl is bound to sweat out her edges and “kitchen” (note: the kitchen is known as being the hair at the back of the neck that has a tendency of being untameable, for those of you that don’t know). The Edgestick solves that problem easily. It’s designed to get close enough to the scalp and edges without worrying and wincing about being burned, leaving unsightly scabs around the hairline. Every woman should have one in her curling iron drawer if she wants to maintain her smooth edges. (I know I’m not the only one with a curling iron drawer or closet.) I’m sick of having to borrow my mother’s (which, funny enough, I bought for her). It’s time that I have my own.

8. Scrivener

I recently found out about Scrivener on Pinterest. It’s a word-processing program for writer’s who need a bit of organization in their writing life. I usually outline my chapters in a notebook, jot down ideas or dialogue in a journal, type out sentences in my notepad app, and scribble character traits on sticky notes. I have several notebooks with words written all over it, front and back, and pieces of paper all over the place. Scrivener cuts down on all of the paper use and allows the writer to arrange and manage his/her thoughts at the click of a mouse button.

I need this software in my life . . . desperately.

9. Air Retro Jordans

Because I’m not as “hip” like all the other cool cats . . .
I’ve never owned a pair of Jordans in my life. I’m 30+ old now and I’m finding myself wanting a pair, particularly the Air Jordan Retro 3, Air Jordan 11, and the Air Jordan 9 “Birmingham Barons” style. I don’t want all three, no. One pair will do just fine, that’s if I can ever find them. My homeboys tell me that I will have to get them online from stores like eBay or Amazon, and I’m like, “No!” How am I supposed to know if they’re authentic? If I’m gonna drop $400-$500 on a pair of shoes I’m buying off someone I’ve never met before I need to be confident that I’m indeed investing in Air Jordans and not Air Gordans or some crap, you get my drift. I really wish I would’ve bought them when they were sold in the Champs and the Foot Lockers and Finish Lines. I don’t know. I may just continue wishing for these.

10. Brahmin

While every other woman is asking her husband or boyfriend for the new Michael Kors handbag (or whatever hot item women are into these days, I wouldn’t know), I’m asking for a Brahmin. Well, not really, since I already have one as my Christmas present in a limited edition color. I’ve been in love with Brahmin bags since my days in college and I’ve always wanted one. Now, I have one . . . that I’m not permitted to open till Christmas Day. That’s fine! At least I know I got one now!

What are some items you’re currently wishing for? Making a list is fun to do. Do it for the heck of it even if it seems silly, and see how many things you come up with.

Crush Groovin’: Erykah Badu

She was born under water with three dollars and six dimes. Not sure what that means? Don’t feel so stupid. Hardly anyone understood it then when they first heard the lyric in On and On.

I don’t think I need to introduce this month’s girl crush. I’ll just let you scroll down the page for pictures of this musical goddess:

Mmmhmmm. Miss Erykah Badu. Or you can simply call her Badu. Better yet, just call her a music goddess because that is what she is. Baduizm, Mama’s Gun, Worldwide Underground, New Amerykah . . . all of her studio albums are solid masterpieces designed to take you into the gifted mind of their creator. Aside from her music and distinct sound, I suppose it’s her eccentricities that land her a spot on my list. Hard to believe why she was able to capture the hearts of men like Andre 3000, Common, The D.O.C., and Jay Electronica, isn’t it? Not really, no. But what is this pull she has on men? Aish, I wish I knew.

Whatever Badu voodoo she’s releasing into the atmosphere, she needs to keep it up so she can continue churning out good music in a world full of studio created “singers.” I am all the way here for it.

Crush Groovin’: Sabi

I’m not too late, am I? Yaaaay, I’m not late!

Wow. I feel like I haven’t posted anything since last year! I’m currently in the process of redesigning Skinny Girl in a Curvy World, complete with photos and new blog entries pertaining to more than just music and girl crushes. Hopefully, I can kick it off really soon! Nevertheless, it’s the last day of January, which means I can’t miss posting about my girl crush of the month.

Now introducing . . .

If you don’t know who this beauty is, you’re about to now. Her name is Sabi (real name Jenice Dena Portlock), and I think she is hawt! If she wasn’t she wouldn’t be anywhere near my list. Maybe you know her from Cobra Starships’s fun song (one wtdtaof my favorite dance tunes, just to let you know); maybe you don’t. But that’s how I know her, and that one song led me to others she released on her own and more collaborations she has done with other artists like Britney Spears, Tyga, and Diplo, to name a few.

By the way, is it me or does the Inglewood, California-born vixen resemble August’s girl crush? Either way, she’s a beauty in her own right. I wish her all the best in finding her place in the overpopulated world of music. But I’d rather her not become a mainstream puppet. (Nevermind what I want. Those are just my selfish feels talking.)

Hit the play button here and below to see why she’s the pick for January’s crush groovin’. Any chick who can rock this deserves to be on the list, don’t you agree?

“Champagne” (This is one of those songs that always makes me want to kick it with my girls and dance the night away.)

Crush Groovin: Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP closing out 2013.

SJP closing out 2013.

When you think of Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP as adoring fans so affectionately call her) a picture of Carrie Bradshaw wearing the most ridiculous outfit anyone has ever seen will always come to mind. No surprises there. The tiny actress did bring life to the fashionista so many women came to love for her puns and unapologetic fashion sense and hate for her moodiness and indecisiveness over Big and Aidan.

During my college era, I remember watching episodes of the series, Sex and the City . . . mainly for the trendy clothes and relationship drama–but mostly for the clothes. It was during the stint of the HBO series that I blossomed into a real fashionista myself after watching four women strut down the streets of New York City in stilettos and wear bright-colored suits and dresses paired with unforgettable jewelry, accessories. (Who can forget the Carrie necklace and the gargantuan flowers?)

I will shamefully admit how I (initially) did not think of SJP as being an attractive woman with looks to kill for. Frankly, I had a very hard time understanding how she landed a role which obviously called for great sex appeal. But somehow, episode after episode, the actress eased her way onto my girl crush list. Before I knew it, I found myself admitting to how adorably cute she was and how much chemistry she had with her female co-stars and her main squeezes, Big (Chris Noth) and Aidan (John Corbett).

I love this look.

I love this look.

Now, SJP is one of my all-time favorite actresses. The reasons? Besides her representing for us skinny girls? Why, it’s because she has successfully gone through her entire career without ever comprising herself for nude scenes (she managed to play on a show about love and sex without showing any hint of nudity), she can wear something that looks like a potted plant on her head with great confidence while everyone else question her [fashion] sanity, and she’s a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador and a philanthropist. Overall SJP is just a fascinating woman, and she is, legit, an entertaining actress.

0f050414b9c52bb29d403bb0ca995dc1Sarah Jessica Parker is the girl next door. No matter what negative, vile comments people spew about her looks, they fail to see her true beauty. Her inner beauty is what makes her one of the most beautiful women in this world of plastic and counterfeits.

Yes, I used to be one of those negative people. But her internal/external beauty–her charisma was what won me over. And it’s why she has a secured spot on my list of girl crushes.

So fly.

So fly.

Crush Groovin’: Chrisette Michele

This one is fairly new . . .

She so purrty!

She so purrty!

I remember when this tatted-up angel released her first single a couple of years ago. The problem is, I don’t recall the name of the debut song. Shame, I know.

About around the time when she released Epiphany, her second album, I started taking notice of her artistry. Epiphany (I’m Leaving) was the song that managed to grab my attention. But it wasn’t until Better, her current album, when I actually saw her as a force to be reckoned with in the universe of R&B and neo-soul divas.

A friend of mine was generous enough to take me to see Chrisette Michele perform here in Birmingham for my birthday months ago. I was extremely tired and wanted to rest up because it was exactly the day after my sister’s wedding (which I’m just now reverting back to a sense of normalcy from that time); of course, I couldn’t resist the offer. Thankfully my friend made sure I didn’t miss out on seeing the intimate performance or else I wouldn’t have witnessed the beautiful spirit that emits from this paragon of [equally] outer and inner beauty. Her voice is soothing to the soul. Her gentle spirit is conspicuous in her interactions with fans. She’s also found love in one of the baddest, hottest guitarist of today and it shows not only in her expressions but also in her creativity.

I like your style!

I like your style!

Chrisette Michele: my most recent girl crush. Not only is she gorgeous, but she’s spiritually wise, too. Just the kind of woman I admire.

Crush Groovin’: Tami Chynn and Tessanne on Music Monday

Tammar Chin bka Tami Chynn

Tammar Chin bka Tami Chynn

Tessanne Chin, or as I call her, The Powerhouse Voice

Tessanne Chin, or as I call her, The Powerhouse Voice

At least Myspace served its purpose.
Kingston, stand up!

First thing’s first. I have been terribly busy for the past month. So busy in fact I no longer know where my beginning ends, where my ending begins, my left from my right, my right from my left. . . . I’m exaggerating but I barely even know today’s date. What I do know is that it is Monday (at least I’ve got that much right).

Second thing is, I know that I haven’t posted anything since the first part of September–like my girl crush for that month. So, to make up for lost time, I’m giving a 2-fer deal for the crush groovin’ category and I am going to post two songs for Music Monday, too. Double-combo!

Initially–before I found myself swamped with wedding plans, maid of honor duties, working, volunteering, birthday celebrations, housewarmings, AND (whew!) moving plans–I was going to post about my girl crush for the month of September . . . because, you know, I have so many I can post for each month up until the one year anniversary of this less than perfect blog. But then blah, blah, blah, [beep] happened and my time escaped while things like my blog suffered because of my poor time-management skills. Whatever. I’m back now, so let’s just fast-forward and get on with it.

Tami-Chynn-1 elitemediagroupja.comI found out about September’s girl crush on Myspace. (Hey, at least I did more than just spend countless hours changing page layouts and creating a bunch of glittery dollz). I thought her music was cool enough for me to learn more about it, so that’s what I did. I found out she was Jamaican . . . Chinese Jamaican to be exact. Before finding her, I was clueless about those of Chinese descent being Jamaican natives because of their ancestors who migrated to the island(s). I was ignorant. I had no idea. Thanks to being introduced to Tami (thank you, Myspace) I now know.

But her sister? Let me say something about Tessanne Chin. No. I can summarize what I think of her in one word alone: POWERHOUSE VOICE. It was only right that I also include her on this post not because she is Tami’s younger sister but because she is currently a contestant on NBC’s The Voice, too. I thought, Why the heck not? Just include both of the lovely women! Granted I haven’t had the chance to see any of her performances yet (this week will be the third week it airs), I already know she has blown the judges away.Tessanne+Chin+TESSANNE

Tami Chynn and Tessanne Chin both share a love for music (sure it’s because their parents instilled it in them considering they were both musicians at some time), are equally as beautiful and have such fun personalities. Their hubbies are blessed and fortunate men to be married to such beauties.

Tami Chynn with her husband, reggae/dancehall singer, Wayne Marshall.

Tami Chynn with her husband, reggae/dancehall singer, Wayne Marshall.

Speaking of hubbies, Tami and her husband, Wayne Marshall, are one of my favorite celebrity couples. I mean, they’re just so friggin’ adorable! They just welcomed their first son together, so I’m sure their baby boy has some musical talent flowing through his veins.

Back on topic, the first song I heard by Tami Chynn was “Frozen” featuring Akon, but that’s not the same song posted below. Just press play and you will see why I’m crushin’ on her. (The beat was a popular one in dancehall music in the year 2006. Another Jamaican artist–who is my male crush–used the same ditty in his song and he makes a cameo appearance in the video.)

The song by Tessanne is the very one that sold me on her talent. Goosebumps. That’s what it left me with: Goose. Bumps.

I’m finally caught up, so the Chin sisters can join the rest of my girl crushes.

Now. Let me go and try to figure out which way is up.

Crush Groovin’: Aaliyah

aaliyah-aaliyahAugust 25, 2001: the day the R&B music world lost the young Aaliyah Dana Haughton. Rather than recalling where I was, what I was doing, and how her passing affected me 12 years ago, I’d like to focus on remembering her beauty and music.

Aaliyah is the third woman I’ve ever had a girl crush on. (Cindy Herron of EnVogue and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins were the first two respectively in case you were wondering. If not, then disregard those names because I’m supposed to be talking about Aaliyah, right?)aaliyah-haughton I specifically remember when I first saw her on television. The station? BET. The song? Back and Forth. And I’ve liked the woman ever since. But it wasn’t until the release of the One in a Million LP album that I was completely sold on being one of her supporters.

aaliyahShe was attractive, could dance (wasn’t she smooth?), and pioneered the shift in what R&B music sounded like in the late 90s thanks to the help of Timbaland and Missy Elliott et. al.

Till this day, I still miss everything about her. I miss seeing the tiny woman on my television. And I don’t care what anyone says: no matter how much the likes of Chris Brown and Drake try to incorporate her voice into their music and revive her with those ridiculous holograms, it will never be the same as having her presence in the world again.

aaliyahhaughtonThe music industry lost a special talent–a talent that was evolving and adhexpanding beyond music. But thankfully her fans and supporters can continue to keep her spirit alive through song, videos, interviews, and even her movies. (Curse Hollywood for not letting her kiss Jet Li, though! That was way off topic, I know.)

Rest in peace, “Baby Girl.” Gone but far, far from forgotten . . . .

The making of We Need A Resolution :

Crush Groovin’: Tracee Ellis Ross

I wish I could get my hair to look this great.

I wish I could get my hair to look this great.

Move over, ladies! Tracee Ellis Ross is joining you as the girl crush of July!

What more could I possibly say that the pictures on this page cannot convey? Yes, she is the daughter of one of the greatest [supreme] divas the world of music has ever been blessed to hear. I have to highlight that fact, but T.E.R. has secured her own spot as one of the most beautiful divas the world of entertainment has been blessed to have.

I honestly don’t know one, single person who does not find this woman attractive. What is it about Tracee Ellis Ross that men and women tend to crush on? Is it her penetrating eyes? Is it her near perfect skin? Is it her curly tresses that so gracefully fall from her crown? Her humorous personality? Or is it that voluptuous rump that gets to follow her everywhere she goes? How about it’s a combination of all of the above? Tracee is sexy for so many reasons that could fill this entire page, but for the sake of keeping it short and sweet, I will say this much: Bu Thiam is one lucky brother to have this arm candy:

Unaltered, natural beauty.

Unaltered, natural beauty.

So, why is T.E.R. considered as one of my girl crushes? Look at the woman. Just look at her!
Then again, this photo says more, yes.

Then again, this photo says more, yes.

TER is too dope. Nuff said.

TER is too dope. Nuff said.

And really, is it necessary for me to explain why she’s even on my list? There’s something about her character that seems ingenuous unlike so many celebrities who are blessed with physical features most women would covet to have. I believe with Miss Tracee Ellis Ross, what you see is what you get. My goodness, she just comes off as one of those people you want to become b.f.f.’s with! (I personally would love to raid her wardobe and jewelry armoire. She even has that tricky, lazy eye thing going on like I do whenever I smile for a flashing camera. That’s reason enough why she and I should be friends! I’m joking . . . sort of.)

Tracee Ellis Ross has a bright spirit that captures people’s attention (clearly, she got it from her mama)–the type of woman who could be seen wearing a pair of Air Jordans one day, Christian Louboutins the next. Now, that’s my kind of girl crush.

She doesn't even need makeup! Flawless, honty! Flaw-less!

Crush Groovin’: DJ Havana Brown

Melbourne native, Angelique Meunier, bka, Havana Brown

Melbourne native, Angelique Meunier, bka, Havana Brown

Let me start off by saying what many already think . . . female DJs are HOT!!!! I’m not sure why, but they are. If I had the patience and a firm desire to learn how to dj and mix music I would do it with no hesitation. I have a few friends who are DJs, too, and could gain knowledge from them if they had the time to teach me. But since I don’t have a firm desire yet and they don’t have the time, I’ll just settle for blogging about this Australian DJ I stumbled across.

“I am not a model. I just look like one.”

I was driving down the interstate late one summer night on my way to a juke joint. Usually, I only listen to what’s on my mp3 player, but this particular night, I chose to listen to a local pop radio station. (See? My music taste is all over the place! I was listening to pop/dance music while heading to a blues joint in the deep woods.) That very night was the first time I heard a song that featured the rapper, Pitbull, and a mad-addictive hook.

djhbI recognized Pitbull but didn’t know who the woman was leading the song. You know how it is when you’re listening to the radio and the radio DJ havanabrown2 doesn’t mention what songs are being played or who the artist is; they just leave you jamming out to no-names. Well, since I don’t have one of those nifty radios that spell out the artist’s name and the song’s title, the only thing I could do was remember a few of Pitbull’s lines in hopes of eventually finding the name of the song. Maybe days later, I searched Google for the lyrics, Pitbull’s name included. “We Run the Night,” by DJ Havana Brown, was what returned. You know what I did next. I went to good ol’ YouTube to find the song! “Yep! That’s it!” There was even an official video released and not those silly lyric videos users post. I was even more thrilled to find that she could mix music and not just be another pretty face in the music industry. As a true music junkie, I can usually tell if I will like a song within the first 30 seconds, and this song roped me in within the first 15. The track, which is the U.S. version completed with additional production by my preferred dance music producer, RedOne, instantly became my Tune-of-the-Summer joint.

DJing in a mini-dress. That would be me.

Fringed leather and bandanas. How biker chic. TOO tough!

Havana Brown’s funky style (consisting of lots’o leather, thigh-high boots, stilettos, bustiers, bandanas, bright colors) and her adorable accent earned the Aussie of Mauritian descent a spot in my girl crush book. Not to mention, we share an affinity for ghetto-gold jewelry. Oh, and let’s not forget: she’s reppin’ for the “skinny” girls.

(FYI: The Havana Brown is actually the name of a rare breed in the feline family. You learn something new everyday!)

Crush Groovin’: Esperanza Spalding

simply gorgeous

Massive hair. Soothing voice. Upright bass. My girl crush.
I’d heard of her long ago from a musician friend of mine, but I’d never listened to any of her music. Until one night, back in 2011 during one of my late evenings when I was hungry for new music to listen to, I decided to discover her music on YouTube.esperanza-spaulding-at-oscars Instantly I fell in love and have been in love with her art ever since. The bonus? She is a bass player! (I’ve always had a sore spot for vocalists who were also musicians.)

I had the pleasure in seeing her perform live last month at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Esperanza-Spalding-2012-Oscar-Hairstyle-19The performance easily goes down as one of the best concerts I’d ever been to in my life. If only that night could have lasted for more than 2 hours!

Esperanza Spalding: Beautiful soul, phenomenal artist.

Yeah, girl. That's what talent sounds like.
